Youth Services

Land of Lincoln Goodwill’s Youth Services mission provides many programs and services designed to promote opportunity and positive choices for youth and young adults who come from diverse backgrounds. Whether it is improving educational performance at school, athletic team building skills, service learning projects or volunteering opportunities, the Youth Services program at Goodwill has something for every youth in our community.

Since 2009, the Land of Lincoln Goodwill Industries Youth Services Mission has been a pillar of support and guidance for young people in our community. Our mission is simple yet powerful: we strengthen communities by helping individuals overcome barriers to employment, offering work opportunities and skills development, and leading environmental sustainability. Our Program is CARF-Accredited each year. CARF International is an independent, nonprofit accreditor of health and human services.

We accomplish this for our youth population through a variety of services including Youth Mentoring, Student-Athlete Program, and Youth Employment and Career Navigation.

To speak with our Youth Services staff about these programs, contact Dr. Ikenna Martin, Director of Youth Services or Dr. Faraji Martin, Youth Services Manager at 217-789-0400.

This program has supported me my whole life, from providing Christmas gifts through my church, to my struggling mother, to providing me with a summer to give back to my community, and now providing me guidance while attending the University of Notre Dame. Their dedication to helping the community is so genuine and appreciated. I couldn’t ask for better mentors.

Youth Mentoring: The Heart of Our Program

Youth Mentoring pairs adult mentors with youth between the ages of 12 and 17 to provide encouragement and act as strong role models to help youth achieve positive academic, career, and personal goals. Mentoring can be one-on-one, or in-group settings. The Youth Mentoring provides after-school services for at-risk youth that focuses on improving educational performance, life skills, and service-learning activities with parental and adult mentor involvement.

At the core of our mission is one powerful relationship: a trusted adult mentor and a young person who needs encouragement, guidance, and someone to believe in them. Our program thoughtfully matches caring mentors with youth ages 12 to 18, forming bonds that are often life-changing for both the mentor and the mentee. These relationships often extend beyond high school as participants navigate college, military service, or the workforce.

Mentors meet with their mentees regularly, engaging in meaningful conversations, community outings, health and wellness activities, STEM programming, school support, and shared goal-setting. These consistent, supportive relationships help young people navigate life’s challenges, build confidence, and discover their strengths. Whether it’s helping with homework, exploring career paths, or just showing up to listen, our mentors create a safe space for growth and self-discovery.

Many of our youth come from environments where stable, one-on-one attention is rare. Through mentorship, they gain resilience, learn to make healthy decisions, and begin to believe in a future full of possibility. It’s this one-to-one connection that makes all the difference, and it’s why mentorship remains the foundation of everything we do.

Competitive Sports: Building Character Through Teamwork

The Student-Athlete Program (SAP) offers youth the opportunity to compete in organized athletics outside of school. The primary purpose of the SAP is to teach youth the values and skill sets of teamwork, responsibility and dedication in a competitive environment. Athletes are mentored on achieving academic success while focusing on graduating high school and preparing themselves for a future career or attending college.

Athletics are more than just games; they’re powerful tools for teaching discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. Our Youth Services Program includes a robust competitive sports component, offering youth the chance to participate on an organized traveling basketball team. For many of our participants, this is their first opportunity to experience the camaraderie of a team, the pride of hard work, and the joy of achieving a shared goal. Through sports, our youth learn how to handle wins with grace, losses with resilience, and challenges with determination. These lessons carry over into the classroom, the workplace, and life.

2026 Enrichment Trips

March 2026—Spring break trip to historical Mound Bayou hosted by the Johnson Brothers. The youth demonstrated exceptional engagement, posing
thoughtful questions and expressing inspiration to excel. Mound Bayou continues to stand as a testament to Black excellence, with ongoing initiatives aimed at documenting its profound
influence on American history. Additionally, the youth participated in a pre-season basketball tournament in Little Rock, Arkansas, where they posted a commendable 2-0 record and secured the tournament title. Thank you to the Springfield Sunrise Rotary for supporting this trip.
April 2026—Kansas City trip to visit the African American baseball museum. The youth enjoyed the history of Kansas City and talking with James Rucker, former mentee, mentor, and now graduate student. They also participated in the Inaugural One-on-One.
Trip to Nashville at HBCU Fisk University—Huge thanks to Christiann Goodson, a former youth in our program. Now based in Nashville, Christiann spoke to our group about beating the odds and aligning with the right individuals to help you reach your goals. She credited the Land of Lincoln Goodwill GoodGuides program for guiding her on her journey to enrolling in college and becoming a successful businesswoman. The experience was made even more special with a visit to HBCU Fisk University, leaving our youth motivated and inspired for the future.

Enrichment Trips: Expanding Horizons and Inspiring Dreams

Exposure creates opportunity. That’s why we prioritize enrichment trips that take our youth beyond the boundaries of their everyday experiences. From college campus tours and professional sports games to museums and historical landmarks, these outings open eyes and open doors. They spark curiosity, fuel ambition, and help our youth envision a future filled with possibility. Many participants say these trips were life-changing moments that shifted their perspective on what they could achieve. With your support, we can continue to make these unforgettable experiences accessible to every child in our program.

Career Navigation: Supporting Youth on the Path to Success

Youth Employment and Career Navigation assists youth and young adults in the program throughout the year with employment skills, such as; how to complete an application and resume, interview etiquette, mock interviews, how to dress, and many other activities associated with obtaining employment in the community. Additionally, youth will receive assistance on the FAFSA, enrolling in post-secondary education, and trade programs.

Connecting with the Community: Service, Celebration, and Support

Our Youth Mentoring Program is deeply rooted in the belief that strong communities shape strong futures. That’s why we go beyond one-on-one mentoring to actively engage youth and families in events and experiences that foster pride, connection, and opportunity.

Throughout the year, we host vibrant cultural celebrations like our Black History Month and Juneteenth events, where youth explore heritage, history, and identity through art, performance, and education. These events create space for reflection, dialogue, and community unity.

We also serve those in need through micro-pantry food preparation and distribution, teaching our youth the value of giving back. These hands-on service activities help instill empathy and social responsibility while meeting real needs in our neighborhoods.

Each Fall, our Back-to-School Events provide hundreds of local students with free backpacks, notebooks, and supplies, ensuring they start the year confident and ready to learn. During the holiday season, our Community Thanksgiving Dinner brings together over 200 attendees in a spirit of gratitude and generosity, with youth and their families receiving a full basket including ham and turkey to take home. Our Christmas Breakfast Celebration adds warmth and joy to the season by ensuring each student has a gift to open, provided in partnership with the Tree of Wishes program.

Also, we prioritize future planning through Youth Summits and Career Days, connecting participants with community leaders, college advisors, and local organizations offering support in education, employment, and wellness.

To support academic growth and career readiness, we maintain a Private Computer Lab open to all youth and their families. This vital space is used for tutoring sessions, presentations, job applications, college essays, and scholarship submissions, equipping our youth with the tools and access they need to succeed.

Every event, every initiative, and every resource reflects our commitment to creating a network of care around our young people, and your support helps make this possible.
